2:00 – 2:15pm –What Is a Killer App?
Masha Zager, Editor, Killer App Magazine

Broadband is delivering on the promise of a connected world. But fast pipes aren't enough by themselves. The outpouring of creativity in the applications space is what’s adding value to the network. How do “killer apps” drive demand for high-speed networks? And what kinds of applications have the potential to transform the way we live, work, learn and play?

2:15 – 3:10pm –Killer App Community Workshop
Joe Savage, FTTH Council – Moderator
Clifford Clarke, CIO, Fort Wayne
Michael Johnston, Vice President-Information Technology, Jackson Energy Authority
Paul Morris, Executive Director, UTOPIA
Gary Evans, CEO, Hiawatha Broadband Communications
Robert Crall, Director Sales, Hitachi Telecom USA
Scott Wilkinson, Vice President, Hitachi Telecom

Being a Killer App community takes more than next-generation connectivity. Vision, inspired leadership and a pioneering spirit are also required. This workshop featuring four fiber-to-the-home pioneers is part of an afternoon of sessions for developers and government leaders who are looking to implement best practices in their communities.

3:10 – 3:40pm – Applications for Real-Estate Developers
John Hughes, CEO, Global Online Solutions Network (GOSN)
Mike Whaling, Business Development Manager, Infinisys Electronic Architects

Broadband applications are the next big thing in amenities across all types of developments. In this session, you’ll hear presentations on some cutting edge examples of this growing opportunity, including GOSN’s integrated audio/video/alarm surveillance system called VIGILARE and the media-centric offerings Electronic Architects is helping its customers deploy.

4:00pm – 4:30pm – Genius Buildings: Green Profit Machines
Herb Hauser, President, Midtown Technologies

Genius Buildings go far beyond “smart buildings.” In these green profit engines, information systems interact with traditional utilities over high-speed networks to reduce operating costs, improve functionality and marketing appeal, and boost return on investment. These buildings deliver benefits to owners, builders, management and residents – and to the environment as well. Here is what you need to know to produce high-value, high-ROI genius buildings and to structure utility and technology design for maximum economic sustainability.

 4:30 – 6:00pm – New Urbanism & City Planning Workshop
Andrés Duany  — Town Planner; Principal, Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company – Moderator
Daniel K. Slone — Partner, McGuireWoods Law Offices, Richmond, VA
Stephen Mouzon — Architect, Co-Founder, The New Urban Guild

How can next-generation connectivity help New Urbanism deliver on its promise of creating walkable, livable communities with less dependence on automobiles – communities where residents can work in their own neighborhoods? In this discussion led by world-renowned town planner Andres Duany, find out why New Urbanism and connectivity need each other, why their convergence is ecologically desirable, what new businesses are possible in the connected community and what developers must know in order to add value to their communities while limiting risk.

6:30 – 8:00pm – Developer Dinner Reception
Andrés Duany — Head of renowned architectural firm DPZ, and “Father of the New Urbanism”
Graham Richard — Mayor, Fort Wayne, Indiana

A convivial dinner will be followed by Q&A and a lively discussion with speaker Andrés Duany. Duany comes to the issue of broadband connectivity from a unique perspective. He is a leader of the New Urbanism, an international movement that seeks to end suburban sprawl and urban disinvestment. His firm, DPZ, has completed designs for close to 300 new towns, regional plans, and community revitalization projects. This work has exerted a significant influence on the practice and direction of urban planning and development in the United States and abroad. The town of Seaside has been documented in over 800 articles and books and was described by Time Magazine as “the most astounding design achievement of its era.” Duany has delivered hundreds of lectures and seminars, addressing architects, planning groups, university students, and the general public. His recent publications include The New Civic Art and Suburban Nation: The Rise of Sprawl and the Decline of the American Dream. He is a founder of the Congress for the New Urbanism, characterized by The New York Times as “the most important collective architectural movement in the United States in the past fifty years.”

As broadband becomes a must-have amenity everywhere, Duany’s timely message is that technology planning must be meaningfully integrated into the process of creating desirable living spaces.

Seating for the dinner is limited to 100 guests. There is no additional charge, but anyone wishing to attend must RSVP here.
