Daniel K. Slone Partner, McGuireWoods Law Offices, Richmond, VA
Mr. Slone has unusual experience in the emerging field of "connectivity." He has drafted contracts for the delivery of voice, video and data services to new communities and multifamily projects, and assisted developer clients in dealing with numerous new issues of licensing, service/product bundling, and the challenges of dealing with an entirely new community "utility" structure.
Drawing on his years of experience in permitting cogeneration facilities, he assists developers in integrating alternative and distributed energy approaches. He has worked with the power industry for more than a decade, having served as counsel for the environmental and land use permitting in the construction of many power production facilities in Virginia and other states, ranging from small distributed energy facilities to 1,000 MW merchant plants. He has been lender's counsel for the environmental and land use aspects of numerous other projects. He has worked across the country on the analysis of dozens of inside-the-fence and hydro projects in connection with their construction, acquisition or sale.
He has successfully dealt with acrimonious local land use issues in connection with alternative fuel use in Michigan, and assisted clients in analyzing air regulations applicable to power production facilities in Bulgaria. His experience with siting solid waste facilities allows him to assist clients in managing these issues as well. He has been involved in one way or another with the creation or operation of the majority of the large-scale solid waste facilities in Virginia, and has worked on facilities in Maryland, Tennessee and Georgia.
Mr. Slone represented the county of Amelia, Virginia, in contracting for its 5,000 ton per day facility, and assisted Lynchburg, Virginia, in analyzing its solid waste management alternatives. He was counsel for the contracting and permitting of the 4,000 ton per day King George, Virginia, facility. He assisted in the development of the Sussex and Gloucester facilities, and he has been counsel for solid waste authorities and landfill purchasers throughout Virginia. He was part of the team that obtained approval for Charles City's port facility where solid waste is brought in by barge for the Charles City landfill. He has also assisted solid waste clients with policy and operational issues. He now assists developers and localities with integrating their utility approach in new and more sustainable ways. Mr. Slone was named one of America's “Leading Lawyers for Environmental Law,” Chambers USA, 2004-2006, and one of the “Best Lawyers in America," Woodward/White, Inc. He received his J.D., cum laude, from University of Michigan Law School, Ann Arbor. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa.
