Steve Mouzon Principal and Co-Founder, The New Urban Guild

Steve Mouzon is a principal and co-founder of The New Urban Guild, which is a talent agency for some of the best architectural talent available today. The Guild is in the process of publishing a book of home plans designed for traditional neighborhoods. The Guild Tool Foundry includes a growing collection of tools that assist in the design of traditional towns and buildings. Mr. Mouzon has authored or contributed to a number of publications including Biltmore Estate Homes, Architectural Elements: Traditional Construction Details, 1001 Traditional Construction Details, and the just-released Traditional Construction Patterns, Design and Detail Rules of Thumb. His home designs continue to be featured as Plan of the Month in Southern Living. Steve is also continuing to shoot new editions of his Catalog of the Most-Loved Places. The Catalog typically includes every structure built before about 1925 in various historic towns or districts. The Catalog began in the South, with volumes on both famous districts such as the French Quarter and lesser-known jewels such as Mooresville, Alabama and Beaufort, South Carolina. Recent volumes include Pienza, Italy, Antigua Guatemala and St. George’s Bermuda. Steve has been an advocate for traditional town planning & smart growth since the early 1980’s. Steve has one of the best private architectural & town planning libraries in the region at over 2,000 volumes, Steve is currently the Town Architect at several New Urbanist developments.

Steve’s house plans continue to be featured in Southern Living, and have been Plan of the Month numerous times. The purpose of his Mooresville Collection of house plans is to create homeplaces that begin to understand and build with the principles that have allowed our predecessors to create places of such profound beauty from very simple things. Most of them can be built in old towns where the lots are long and narrow, and where the front porch is the anchor of daily life. Steve’s Biltmore Estate Homes collection was the first premium collection Southern Living ever did, and is a joint venture between them and the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. It is also the first-ever attempt to tell the story of a place through the medium of house plans, most of which focus on the simple farmers’ cottages scattered across the great estate. Steve has authored or contributed to a number of publications in recent years, including the Public Works Manual (co-authored with Andres Duany & Daisy Kone). Other publications include Biltmore Estate Homes (Southern Living), Architectural Elements: Traditional Construction Details (McGraw-Hill), 1001 Traditional Construction Details (McGraw-Hill) & the Charter of the New Traditional Architecture, Traditional Construction Patterns and Gulf Coast Emergency House Plans.
