Broadband and Fiber-to-the-Premises, FTTP, make Fort Wayne more competitive in retaining and gaining jobs:
- Verizon has created 900 new jobs and supplies over 128,000 homes and businesses with fiber-to-the-premises
- ACE Link Broadband Network has reached 87 schools, 3,000 teachers, and over 54,000 students, making Fort Wayne the first city in Indiana to provide broadband services to all schools
- Mayor Richard writes a monthly column for Broadband Properties magazine on how Fort Wayne uses technology to make government innovative and more effective
Fort Wayne’s iTeams are charged with finding ways to use technology to improve services. iTeams are launching new programs that help bridge the digital divide.
- The NetLiteracy iTeam is aimed at empowering young people to increase computer availability and Internet literacy for underserved youth, families and seniors
- The Hearing Impaired iTeam is working to bring greater independence to the deaf and hearing impaired community by developing a video relay service on a broadband network
- The Virtual Medicine Eye iTeam is working to provide real-time diagnosis for diabetic patients with possible retinal problems
Fort Wayne is a leader in using innovative technology and training to produce a high performance government. The Public Safety Academy will demonstrate this by employing best practices in education and training. The Academy will be one of the first in the nation to use broadband to deliver training to public safety professionals and students pursuing a career in public safety.
Innovation and investment lead to new job and business opportunities. The “$1 Billion Invest Fort Wayne” plan is an urban investment strategy to promote job and business growth. More than $500 million in private investments have occurred since early 2005. The goal is to reach $1 billion by December 31, 2007.

Lean Six Sigma has allowed Fort Wayne to save over $10 million by using business practices
- Author Michael L. George features Fort Wayne in his Lean Six Sigma for Service book
- Mayor Richard and Fort Wayne were the cover story in the April/May 2006 edition of iSixSigma magazine
- Cities such as Chicago, the State of Tennessee, Milwaukee County in Wisconsin, and officials from Canada and Korea have visited Fort Wayne to learn about high performance government
